French midfielder Jean-Victor Makengo (24) has joined FC Lorient from Serie A side Udinese, the Brittany outfit have announced. Lorient have reportedly bought Makengo for a total package worth €13m bonus included, meaning a record transfer for Les Merlus.

This year’s Ligue 1 surprise package were not short of financial means following the €27m departure of Dango Ouattara (20) to Bournemouth, and the expected €30m sale of Terem Moffi (23) to Ineos-owned Nice. Makengo has signed a four-and-a-half year deal and will wear the #17 jersey with the Regis Le Bris-led side.

Makengo has played in the Italian top flight since October 2020, where he has appeared for I Friulani on 66 occasions in the league (one goal, four assists). The Frenchman is no stranger to Ligue 1 football – he previously played for SM Caen, OGC Nice, and Toulouse FC. Makengo is Lorient’s third signing of the January transfer window following the loan move of out-of-favour Lyon midfielder Romain Faivre (24) and the transfer of Senegalese international striker Bamba Dieng (22) from Marseille.
