After a few weeks of speculation, the rumors have been officially confirmed — two of the best professional wrestlers in the world today will collide in what is sure to be a high-flying, stunning display for the ages, as Kota Ibushi defends his newly won NEVER Openweight Championship against British sensation Will Ospreay.
While the match has been pencilled in for Wrestle Kingdom 13 for several weeks now, there was some question to whether it would ultimately take place, after Ospreay was taken off the World Tag League tour and missed several UK dates to heal up from injuries.
Ospreay returned at Sunday’s World Tag League Finals defeating Taichi in a match to determine the #1 contender to the NEVER title, which Ibushi then won in the next match by defeating Hirooki Goto.
Fans have been asking for this “dream match” for a very long time, but recently Ospreay himself began hyping up a potential collision between the two. However, due to him being a junior heavyweight, and Ibushi wrestling in the heavyweight division, a match for the NEVER Openweight title was the most logical scenario for breaking New Japan’s generally rigid weight division segregation.
