Minnesotans Meuleners and Kettler will wrestle in a special heavyweight match
Northern State senior heavyweight Matt Meuleners has been invited to participate in the 47th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic next month. The prestigious invitation caps a big off-season of competition for Meuleners, a 3-time All-American and 2-time defending national champion. He also finished sixth at the University Freestyle Nationals in May, then was third at the University World Team Trials in August.
The NWCA All-Star Classic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at American University in Washington, D.C. The event serves as a premier event to help grow the sport of wrestling and features largely Division I competition. Meuleners will face Jake Kettler of George Mason Univeristy in a special heavyweight match. Kettler, a member of the University of Minnesota wrestling squad last season, was a 2012 USA Olympic Trials qualifier.
“I’m beyond excited for Matt,” said NSU head coach Pat Timm. “He’s worked really hard this summer and has done well in a couple of high-profile events. This is a great opportunity for him to carry the momentum of this summer into the upcoming season.”
Meuleners became only the second two-time national champion in NSU wrestling history and the only one to do it at the NCAA Division II level after knocking off St. Cloud State’s Jake Kahnke for the second time in as many title matches. He was also named as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Year by the league’s head coaches. With one season of eligibility left in his career, Meuleners already has more than 100 career victories.
