Frederik Vesti of Prema Powerteam has claimed the inaugural Formula Regional European Championship title.
Polesitter David Schumacher had a good start, but Vesti did even better and immediately applied pressure on the German. Schumacher kept the Dane at bay while his teammate and compatriot Lirim Zendelli made a successful attack at Vesti to take second.
From this point on Schumacher was untroubled and went on to claim his fourth wins of the season, 6s clear off Zendeli who came second and Jake Hughes, who overtook Vesti on the penultimate lap.
The Danish racer crossed the line fourth to seal the title in what has been a dominant campaign highlighted by 12 wins and 17 podium finishes. Vesti also scored a valuable haul of 25 FIA Superlicense points.
The battle for second place in the final standings is still open, with Vesti’s Prema team-mate Enzo Fittipaldi (sixth in race 3), David Schumacher (winner in the last race at Mugello) still in contention.
The German has 265 points to his name against 306 of the Brazilian, but with 75 still up for grabs at Monza anything is possible.
