John Cena stepped up in AJ Styles’ place against Daniel Bryan in a steel cage match on December 27. The bout took place at a WWE live event in Uniondale, New York and the WWE Championship was on the line.
This was John’s second night back in WWE, with his return coming just one night earlier in Madison Square Garden.
The 16-time world champion has not been featured as a full-time Superstar in quite some time, as he has shifted his focus to his career in Hollywood. Cena’s latest movie is Bumblebee, which is a critical hit but has struggled during its opening week at the box office.
Cena is expected to return to WWE programming on the New Year’s Day edition of SmackDown Live. It’s unknown if he will continue to work with Daniel Bryan, or if an ongoing program between the two is being planned by WWE Creative. It’s worth noting that Bryan’s first WWE title win came against John at SummerSlam in 2013.
