The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will open up the 2013-14 season dual season on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym. SMSU is coming off a season in which the Mustangs went 13-6 and 3-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. SMSU experienced two heartbreaking losses that were decided by criteria — 19-18 to No. 19 Augustana and 19-18 to No. 4 Upper Iowa. SMSU sent four individuals to the NCAA national championships and all are back for the 2013-14 season — Justin Reinsma (133), Jacob Begin (165), Kyle Begin (174) and Travis Peralta (184). Jesse Nelson enters his seventh season at the helm of the Mustang wrestling program (38-40-1).
SCOUTING CONCORDIA
Concordia-Moorhead went 8-5 last season at NCAA Division III and finished in a tied for 13th place at the NCAA Nationals. It was the fourth straight season in which the Cobbers have placed within the top 15. The Cobbers returns eight starters including All-American Jake Long. Long finished fifth at 149 at last year’s national meet. He went 21-10 in 2013-14 and has 48 career victories.

The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team opened up the 2013-14 season at the 21st annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings on Sunday. The all-day event was hosted by South Dakota State University and featured 35 NCAA Division I, Division II, and NAIA teams.
Justin Reinsma took fourth place at 133 pounds and finished the day with a record of 3-2. Reinsma defeated two Division I opponents in the process — Eric Wilson (Missouri) and Nathaniel Thomas (Minnesota). Reinsma opened up the day with a 10-3 decision over Northern State’s Clayton Buchanan after receiving a bye in the first round. Reinsma would follow up that performance by edging out Missouri’s Eric Wilson 6-5 in the quarterfinal bout. Reinsma’s first hiccup of the day came against Jordan Northrup (unattached) in the semifinal round as Northrup won by fall at 3:21. Reinsma was bumped down to the loser’s bracket and triumphed over his second Division I opponent of the day as he defeated Minnesota’s Nathaniel Thomas 3-1. Reinsma failed to make it three defeats of Division I opponents as he fell by a 14-4 major decision to Nebraska’s Ben Morgan in the third place bout. Reinsma finished with a 3-2 record on the day and gathered 12.50 points.
Cole Wilson earned a fourth place finish at 285 pounds by going 5-2 on the day. Wilson’s two losses came at the hands of a single wrestler — Minnesota’s Michael Kroells. Wilson lost 5-0 in the quarterfinal round to Kroells after Wilson received an opening round bye. Wilson would later fall to Kroells 6-0 in the third place bout. In between the losses, Wilson won five straight bouts to get to the third place bout by defeating Ben Schnurr (Iowa Central CC) by fall at 0:51, Aaron Rafalko (Unattached) by major decision 9-0, Malcolm Allen (Iowa Central CC) by decision, 5-2, Nyle Bartling (Nebraska) by decision, 2-0 and Jared Torrence (Northern Illinois) by a 2-1 decision.

Wilson won five straight bouts to get to the third place bout by defeating Ben Schnurr (Iowa Central CC) by fall at 0:51, Aaron Rafalko (Unattached) by major decision 9-0, Malcolm Allen (Iowa Central CC) by decision, 5-2, Nyle Bartling (Nebraska) by decision, 2-0 and Jared Torrence (Northern Illinois) by a 2-1 decision. Wilson defeated two Division I opponents along the way to his fourth place finish. Wilson’s two losses came at the hands of a single wrestler, the University of Minnesota’s Michael Kroells. Wilson is the first Mustang to be named NSIC Wrestler of the Week this season. SMSU’s Jacob and Kyle Begin were named to the honor last season.
