Men’s professional wrestling history has been talked about in what seems like hundreds of books, DVD’s and other avenues. Women’s professional wrestling had the “Lipsticks & Dynamite” documentary and a few other avenues.
Let me sum up the book by stating if there was a Master degree class on women’s wrestling, Laprade & Murphy’s book would be its textbook. It covers the godmother’s of wrestling like Mildred Burke, Mae Young, Fabulous Moolah & Joyce Grable and also gives the current stars like Bayley, Mercedes Martinez, Jessicka Havok, Charlotte Flair & Sasha Banks their due. In the middle are about one hundred profiles of stars of WWE, NWA, AWA & international stars as well.
I got the chance to meet the authors at Shimmer 91 over WrestleMania weekend and told them the book is fabulous. I mentioned it felt like a history book but it it isn’t bogged down in just covering the partnership of Burke & her estranged husband Billy Wolfe who had a great stable of performers. It takes you on a ride through the annals of time including wrestling’s arrival on the new concept of the 1930-40’s known as Television.
