Connacht bolster second row options by signing Irish-qualified lock from Wasps

Posted on November 7, 2022

CONNACHT HAVE TODAY announced the signing of James Cannon from Wasps.

The 28-year-old lock joins Pat Lam’s side for the 2016/17 season, having made 93 appearances during his six-season Wasps spell.

“James has been part of a competitive mix of second row players at Wasps but has shown his talent when given the chance,” said Lam, whose side suffered their third consecutive defeat of the new season over the weekend at the hands of the Scarlets in the Guinness Pro12.

“He brings a vast amount of experience from playing in both the Aviva Premiership and European Champions Cup and will greatly boost our second row options. We’re all looking forward to welcoming him to Connacht Rugby.”

Cannon was born in Kettering in England but — according to Connacht’s press release — he’s also Irish-qualified. The six-foot-eight forward was a member of the England U20 squad that won a Six Nations Grandslam in 2008.

Cannon, who joined Wasps from Northampton Saints, has been included in Connacht’s European Champions Cup squad that was registered last week. He has already arrived in Galway and joined up with his new team-mates at the Sportsground today.

“I’m very excited about the new challenge in Connacht and look forward to working hard to try to get more first-team opportunities and to play my part within the squad,” Cannon said.
