Naomi officially joined the SmackDown roster last night. She appeared in a backstage segment with authority figure Sonya Deville. When Naomi asked Deville what her first match would be, Deville said she didn’t know Naomi was coming to SmackDown and doesn’t know if Naomi measures up. Naomi reminded Deville that she’s a two-time SmackDown Women’s Champion. Deville said she’ll think about it and let Naomi know next week.
Naomi also did a post-show interview where she said she doesn’t need to reintroduce herself to the WWE fans. Naomi said the fans know her better than everyone and she’s always been able to count on them.
In dark matches that took place before last night’s SmackDown, Cal Bloom defeated Austin Theory and Kacy Catanzaro & Xia Li defeated Dakota Kai & Aliyah. Roman Reigns & The Usos defeated Finn Balor & The Street Profits in the post-show dark match.
While the final numbers won’t be this high due to preseason football airing on Fox in some markets, SmackDown averaged 2.874 million viewers in the overnight ratings last night. In an interview with Bleacher Report, Riddle responded to Roman Reigns taking credit for the success of SummerSlam:
No disrespect to Roman, he seems like a swell fella, but at the same time, it’s like when people say they’re a good parent. You know what? If you were a good parent, your kids would be telling you you’re a good parent. When he’s saying ‘Acknowledge me’ or ‘I move the needle,’ no, you don’t. You’re related to The Rock. Shut up. Like, I’m not impressed, I can beat you up in a real fight. So, shut your mouth.
You’re not moving needles. I’m the real stallion, RK-Bro is moving the merch, we’re moving the needle, and that’s it. I don’t want to say too much, I’m not trying to get in trouble. Hey, hats off to him. He’s amazing at what he does. I do like what he does, but at the same time, it’s like, get off your high horse. You’re in that spot for a reason. You’re not a bro. You’re second generation. I’m first generation.

Mickie James told The Shining Wizards that she hopes that NWA’s Empower PPV will become an annual event: “We’re hoping. I’m hoping. We have definitely talked about this, especially because we’re introducing the (Women’s Invitational) Cup as an inaugural thing. The Cup will happen every single year. The whole deal is we’re going to find the top 10 prospects or the top 10 women that we think would make incredible NWA Women’s Champions and every year we’ll have this Cup. So there will be one winner, and she will always get a championship title shot at the NWA Women’s Champion. So, this first one will be the very next night at 73. My hope is that Empower is an annual thing and we can present this Cup at every Empower, and we can keep moving forward. But I do feel this is the first of many women-driven products for NWA as a whole, so I’m excited about that.”
Actor John Goodman narrated the opening video for tomorrow’s NWA 73 PPV.
