As promised, Adam Cole and Johnny Gargano went to war in the third and final chapter in their bitter rivalry this Saturday night at NXT Takeover: Toronto.
The main event NXT Championship bout was, as advertised, a Two-Out-of-Three Falls match with each fall bearing a different stipulation – a regular wrestling match, a Street Fight, and if need be a final stipulation decided by NXT General Manager William Regal.
Cole would ultimately win the first fall after a long back-and-forth match. After being kicked in the groin by the champion, Gargano decided to end the “wrestling match” portion of the evening by brutally assaulting his opponent with a steel chair, throwing away a valuable point via disqualification.
Gargano then continued his beating in a Street Fight, resulting in a second lengthy, even more closely fought contest that involved numerous objects including steel chairs and kendo sticks. In the end, the challenger scored the point necessary to remain alive after lawn-darting Cole into a steel chair and applying the Gargano Escape.
Mr. Regal’s stipulation then quickly revealed itself to the fans – a steel cage, covered in barbed wire, affixed with dozens of foreign objects. Among them more chairs and kendo sticks, a ladder, multiple tables, a sledgehammer, a sack full of mysterious goodies, and more.
After both men nearly killed each other and themselves multiple times, Gargano would use a pair of pliers to remove some of the barbed wire, choke out Cole with in while standing on top of the cage, before both stars crashed 20-feet down to the floor through two tables. By sheer force of luck, Cole landed on top of his opponent, and the referee was forced to count the three and award the match, and the title, to the unconscious champion.
