“As the president-elect — and in the minds of the perpetrators, the inspiration for these hateful acts — you have a solemn responsibility and unique capacity to condemn this behavior in the strongest of terms,” the letter reads.
The organization also circulated an online petition, which garnered over 31,000 signatures as of this writing, calling on Trump to denounce the actions.
The letter cites a list of acts reported in schools throughout the United States. In one instance, junior high school students in Michigan reportedly shouted, “let’s build the wall” and “you need to go back to Mexico” to a Latino peer, according to the Lansing State Journal.
Stand for Children co-founder and CEO Jonah Edelman argued in a separate op-ed for Time magazine that “the president sets a moral tone for our country — and children notice.”
“Such acts tell children — because of their race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation — that they are not part of our country, and are not safe in our schools,” Edelman wrote.
In his first interview following his victory in the presidential election, Trump told “60 Minutes” that those committing these acts should “stop.”

But in its open letter, Stand for Children says he hasn’t done enough.
“All of America has seen how powerful your voice is, how skillfully you use tools of communication, and how much sway you have over your many supporters,” the letter says. “So please, use that voice to unequivocally denounce these acts of hatred and help us put an end to this appalling trend once and for all.”
