SCSU Wrestling earns top spot in NSIC Preseason Poll

Posted on July 13, 2020

The two-time defending NCAA National Champions of St. Cloud State sit on top of the 2016-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Wrestling Coaches’ Rankings.

The Huskies had 79 points and five wrestlers ranked number one in their weight class. Upper Iowa was second with 57 points and Augustana was third with 33. Northern State was fourth with 19 points.

SCSU charted an 8-0 NSIC record last winter and is the five-time defending conference champion. The Huskies have not lost an NSIC match since 2011.

Individually, SCSU had five wrestlers ranked #1 in the NSIC preseason poll. Top-ranked Huskies this season included defending NCAA champ Brett Velasquez at 125-pounds, 3-time All-American Austin Goergen at 285-pounds, two-time All-American Matt Nelson at 141-pounds, All-American Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds and three-time All-American Gabe Fogarty at 165-pounds.

NSIC Wrestling’s non-conference schedule gets underway this weekend with UIU, MSU, NSU, Augie and UMary all in action. The Huskies will start their 2016-17 season on Nov. 13 with a trip to the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa.

The first NSIC dual will take place on Thursday, December 1 when St. Cloud State travels to SMSU at 7 p.m.
