Manheim, Pennsylvania – With only six duals taking place over the week of Thanksgiving, there were minimal changes in the most recent NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday.
Iowa received all 14 first-place votes to come in as the unanimous No. 1. The rest of the top five teams remained the same. The Hawkeyes (3-0) were impressive in a 32-3 dual win at home against then-No. 6 Wisconsin. Highlighting the dual for Iowa was Austin DeSanto, who defeated top-ranked and 2018 NCAA Division I champion Seth Gross at 133 pounds.
The only other matchup between ranked teams saw Ohio State beat Cornell 23-9 at a sold-out Covelli Center in Columbus. Ohio State moved up one spot to No. 7 this week, while Cornell stayed No. 17. No. 18 North Carolina was the only other ranked team in action. The Tar Heels (3-1) held off a solid Appalachian State squad 18-13 in Chapel Hill. No new teams entered the Top 25 this week.
Ranked duals this week: On Friday, No. 3 Penn State faces No. 13 Lehigh, while No. 12 Princeton heads to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face No. 9 Oklahoma State. On Sunday, Princeton will complete its cross-country gauntlet by returning to New Jersey to face top-ranked Iowa.
Methodology: The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote and so on through to one point for a 25th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results.
