New Japan held a press conference today to officially announce that Kenny Omega will defend the IWGP title against Hiroshi Tanahashi on 1/4. The two spoke about one another, with both talking about the generational gap between them. Omega himself during the presser indicatacted that it would be a battle between the more western, newer style of wrestling he represents against Tanahashi’s more classic, traditional wrestling.
Both have cemented their right to face one another in the last few months. Following the G1, Kenny Omega successfully defended the IWGP title twice, first against Tomohiro Ishii then against Cody and Kota Ibushi in a triple threat match. Hiroshi Tanahashi successfully defended his title shot twice as well; he first took care of Kazuchika Okada, then went on to defeat Jay White at King of Pro Wrestling.
Kenny Omega and Hiroshi Tanahashi have faced one another before, with Omega defeating Tanahashi to win the vacant Intercontinental title back at New Beginning 2016. They were scheduled to meet again at Dominion that year in New Japan’s first ever ladder match, but Tanahashi pulled out of the match with a shoulder injury.
