Augustana Wrestling Ready for 40th Annual Midwest Classic

Posted on July 5, 2020

The two-day event is the largest D2 wrestling tournament in the nation with over 45 teams

SIOUX FALLS, S.D – After opening the season with four tournaments, the Augustana wrestling team competes in two more before the end of the calendar year, starting this weekend, when the Vikings head to Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday for the Midwest Classic Invitational.

Without team scores in any of the previous events, the Vikings enter the weekend without an overall team record, but several wrestlers hit the road with plenty of success already on the season.

Colin Ayers leads the Vikings with a 14-5 record on the season, which includes one fall, five tech falls and a pair of major decisions at 157 lbs.

Two Vikings enter the weekend with 11 wins, including Clayton Wahlstrom at 197 lbs., with an 11-7 mark, with one each in pins and tech falls, and three major decisions.

Down one weight class at 184 lbs., Daniel Bishop heads to Fremont with an 11-6 record, which includes his first pin of the season in his last event, with five tech falls and two major decisions.

Another Viking on the trip with double-digit wins, heavyweight Luke Nohns takes his 10-6 mark on the road, hoping to add to his four pins on the season. He also enters the weekend with a pair of major decisions under his belt.

While still looking to cross the double-figure win plateau, Jackson Sweeney owns a winning record with a 7-2 mark at 165 lbs., and he won all seven matches the hard way, as all of them went the distance.

Following action this weekend, the Vikings enter the holiday break before returning to action in their final tournament of the regular season on Dec. 29, at the Warrior-Viking Open in Fremont, Neb. and then open the dual and NSIC season on Jan. 3, 2019 at Northern State.
