WASHINGTON, DC — Thousands of marchers are expected to converge on the nation’s capital Saturday for the 2020 Women’s March. The annual event brings together grassroots activists and organizers from across the county to “harness the political power of diverse women and communities” with the aim of effecting social change.
The 2020 Women’s March encompasses a week of activities leading up to the actual march Saturday morning. Things kicked off Wednesday with a “Solidarity and the Immigration Justice Movement” session, followed by a “No War With Iran — Remove Trump!” protest Thursday afternoon on Capitol Hill. Other march-related events continue through Sunday. Marchers are encouraged to RSVP.
The march itself starts with a 10 a.m. meetup Saturday at Freedom Plaza, on Pennsylvania Avenue between 14th Street NW and 15th Street NW.
Marchers driving to the event are encouraged to park at outlying Metrorail stations and ride a Metro train or bus to Freedom Plaza. The closest Metro stations are Metro Center, McPherson Square, Gallery Place/Chinatown, and Federal Triangle. Find out more about Metro at the WMATA website.
The program will begin at 11 a.m. with a moment of silence. The Chilean protest group Lastesis will lead marchers in singing “Un violador en tu camino” (“A Rapist in Your Path”). Chants and more songs will follow, leading up to the start of the march.
