U.S. Gold Medal Hockey Champion Marries Her Canadian Rival

Posted on May 11, 2020

POWNAL, MAINE — Meghan Duggan, captain of the gold medal-winning USA women’s Olympic hockey team, has married a rival on the ice, Gillian Apps, three-time Olympic champion and Canada’s former forward. The two tied the knot on Sept. 22 on a farm in a small town outside Portland, Maine.

The newlyweds have faced off twice in the Olympics. Canada won both times in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. The gold medal game in the Pyeongchang was the U.S. against Canada. Duggan led the U.S. to victory to bring home the gold.

Kacey Bellamy, Brianna Decker and Erica Lawler, fellow hockey Olympians, were the couple’s bridesmaids.

The Team USA website says Duggan and Apps aren’t the first such couple born out of the North American hockey rivalry. The U.S.’s Julie Chu and Canada’s Caroline Ouellette, both four-time Olympic medalists, announced their child in November 2017.

The U.S.-Canada rivalry has been raging for decades, including a nearly 30-year head-to-head in the Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, in which the two hockey giants always faced off for the title. The U.S. won the last four, according to NBC.
