Posted on April 11, 2020

NEWARK, NJ — More than 500 people were “removed” from the country by deportation officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Newark over a three-month period, according to the agency’s most recent report.

ICE released its second quarter enforcement data for FY19 earlier this week. The report covers from January to March. It included local statistics for the Newark ERO field office, which processes detainees from across the state.

Between January and March, ICE officers reported a total of 705 arrests out of the Newark office. According to ICE, 611 of the arrestees (87%) had criminal convictions or pending criminal charges when taken into custody. Officials said 94 of the arrestees (13%) were taken into custody for “other immigration violations.”

Executive Associate Director Nathalie Asher offered the following statement about the agency’s nationwide statistics for the second quarter of FY 2019:

“The situation at the border continues to impact interior enforcement, with ERO personnel routinely detailed to support the processing and detention of arriving aliens. Administrative arrests of criminal aliens over the first two quarters of FY19 are down 14 percent versus the same time period in FY18. And, ICE removals stemming from U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehensions have increased 10 percent in the first two quarters of FY19 over FY18.”
