CAMBRIDGE, MA — Sen. Elizabeth Warren and her husband made $905,742 in 2018, according the tax returns she released Wednesday. Her tax returns showed she and her husband paid about $200,000 in taxes. The release comes as the 2020 presidential candidate has been at the forefront of a push to make sure presidential and vice-presidential candidates release tax returns.
That push has come in the form of an anti-corruption bill that would require the IRS to release eight years of tax returns before and during a president’s tenure in office.
She’s also been critical of President Donald Trump for not making his taxes public.
Warren claimed $50,128 in gifts to charity in 2018. She listed her principal profession as “U.S. Senator,” and her husband’s as “professor.” She reported $176,280 as income from her job as a senator and $324,687 from writing. Warren’s authored at least four books, including “The Two-Income Trap,” and “This Fight is Our Fight.” Her husband Bruce Mann earned $402,897 as a professor at Harvard Law School.
“There’s a crisis of faith in government — and that’s because the American people think the government works for the wealthy and well-connected, not for them,” said Warren in a statement. “And they’re right. I’ve put out 11 years of my tax returns because no one should ever have to guess who their elected officials are working for. Doing this should be law.”
In addition to requiring the IRS to release tax returns of presidential, vice-presidential, and congressional candidates and office-holders, Warren’s legislation, which was introduced last fall, would prohibit government officials from holding or trading stock. It applies the conflict of interest laws to the president and vice president through the Presidential Conflicts of Interest Act; and requires senior government officials to divest from privately-owned assets that could present conflicts, including large companies and commercial real estate.
Pundits say having Congress pass the bill would be a steep path to climb. Many say the bill appears to be more of a mission statement that spotlights the Warren who helped establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau following the 2008 financial crisis.
Warren released 10 years of her tax returns in August.
One of Warren’s rival for the 2020 nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, told the New York Times he planned to release his tax returns by Monday.
