Commission offers €20M to run EU information hotline
The call center dealt with over 100K enquiries last year.
The European Commission is offering a €20 million contract to run its call center.
Last year 109,000 people called or emailed the Europe Direct Call Center to ask for information on the EU, which the Brussels-based hotline provides in the bloc’s 24 official languages.
In 2018 most inquiries came from Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom, according to the helpline’s annual report, with questions ranging from food safety and single-use plastics to migration. The main current affairs subject EU citizens asked about last year was Brexit.
Most people get in touch via email, and those who call in on 00 800 67891011 are treated to Mozart’s piano concerto No. 21 while on hold.
The Commission will officially put the five-year contract, worth up to €20 million, out to tender in mid-December.
