In July 2017, a bus that carried 60 pilgrims was returning from Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir after the devotees visited the shrine. After 8 pm in the evening, the bus reached Batengoo in Amarnath district. Over here, the pilgrims were shocked as a group of militants attacked the bus and started firing indiscriminately. Eight passengers lost their lives and some others were grievously injured.

Sheikh Salim Gafur, however, was the hero during this attack. Gafur arrived in Surat with 52 pilgrims, whose lives he saved. The brace man was greeted by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani where he promised Gafur’s name would be recommended for the bravery award. Rupani kept his word and this Republic Day, Gafur will be recognized for his brave and corageous actions that saved the lives of his passengers.
