Midday brief, in brief
Today at Commission, eurozone and ‘No Planet B’
Commission expresses regret at Trump’s stance on climate change.
The Commission had a packed agenda Wednesday, starting with a paper on the future of the eurozone was unveiled.
“With the euro, a status quo is not possible,” said Pierre Moscovici, the economic and financial affairs commissioner, at the podium. The plan he was presenting sets a deadline of 2025 for strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union by, among other things, giving greater powers to the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers.
The Commission also presented plans on road transport, including new rules for truck drivers working throughout Europe.
While the commissioners were presenting their plans for Europe, the U.S. administration was saying it is ready to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.
Vice President Maroš Šefčovič said the international community and business would be “disappointed” if the news about Paris was confirmed but said he believed Europe was ready “to assume leadership” in the fight against climate change.
He added that he had told White House officials that “for Europe this is no Plan B because we do not have a Planet B.”
