Juncker: No ‘sufficient progress’ on Brexit by end-October barring miracle

‘I’m saying that there will be no sufficient progress from now until October unless miracles would happen.’

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said today that “sufficient progress” has not been made in the Brexit talks for the U.K. and the EU to move forward to trade negotiations on schedule.

Speaking to reporters at an EU summit in Tallinn, Juncker said: “By the end of October we will not have sufficient progress,” a key condition that will allow the British and EU negotiators to move on from Brexit “divorce” issues like citizens’ rights to arrangements for the future relationship.

Asked if the fourth round of negotiations, which concluded on Thursday, would make a difference, Juncker replied: “I’m saying that there will be no sufficient progress from now until October unless miracles would happen.”

Juncker echoed the sentiments of European Council President Donald Tusk, who said “there is no sufficient progress yet” earlier this week after a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May in London.

EU leaders will formally decide at a summit in Brussels next month whether “sufficient progress” has been made.
