First, a devastating loss at the hands of the United States National Team. Then, seven weeks later, the MLS All-Stars absolutely punish Manchester United. Is this the summer English football dies?
After two such comprehensive beatings, what self-respecting fan would ever admit watching the Premiership? Especially when the MLS late season and playoffs are on at the same time.
I mean, I could maybe see watching a game in December or something, when MLS is on a season break…but even then, why not just watch MLS games that you DVR'd from earlier in the season? Why watch inferior, third-rate bums, when you could enjoy MLS Cup once again?
I'm going to go out on a limb here, maybe make a crazy prediction – but I think the All-Star Game score will be closer than you think. Maybe only 3-0 or so.
I know, I know. After all, the All-Stars have only lost one All-Star Game ever – and that was on penalties. Meanwhile, Manchester United has never even played in an All-Star Game before. So sure, on paper it's an absolute mismatch.
Keep in mind, the All-Stars have real games to play August through October, trying to make the playoffs. And, realistically? They're the Major League Soccer All-Stars. That's pretty much the peak, right there. They've got nothing to prove after that. There's a reason it's one of the criteria for induction into the Soccer Hall of Fame. So there's the risk of a little complacency from the All-Stars.
On the other hand, Manchester United – well, they don't get to measure themselves against this quality of opposition very often. The MLS All-Stars are exactly that – all stars. Every one of those guys personifies greatness. Manchester United players, on the other hand, will be fighting to prove themselves to their coach, whoever their coach is.
And like every underdog, they'll be gunning for the top team, trying to make a name for themselves. You have to be careful when you play a team like that. If USL teams can challenge MLS teams in the Open Cup, then Manchester United might give the All-Stars a game.
I'm not saying Manchester United will win or score a goal or anything crazy like that. I'm just saying the All-Stars need to be careful.
