Wallabies stick with winning formula for second Test against Ireland

Posted on March 6, 2019

The Wallabies have retained their winning line-up as they look to secure the three-Test series against Ireland on Saturday night at Melbourne’s AAMI Park.

Australian coach Michael Cheika has stuck with the same squad after their 18-9 victory in game one in Brisbane. It is the first time since Cheika took over the Australian coaching job in 2014 and in 46 matches that he has named the same 23 players in successive Tests.

Cheika resisted the urge to tinker with a winning formula despite the return of flanker Ned Hanigan (knee injury) and lock Rory Arnold (suspension). He also decided to retain youngsters such as utility back Jack Maddocks, with Australia having the chance to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead over the Six Nations champions.

The Wallabies will persist with a six-two split among the finishers, with rain and wind forecast. Ireland last played the Wallabies in Melbourne in 2008 when Australia won 18-12 in a tight tussle at Docklands.

Wallabies: Israel Folau, Marika Koroibete, Samu Kerevi, Kurtley Beale, Dane Haylett-Petty, Bernard Foley, Will Genia; Caleb Timu, Michael Hooper (captain), David Pocock, Adam Coleman, Izack Rodda, Sekope Kepu, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Scott Sio. Reserves: Tolu Latu, Allan Alaalatoa, Taniela Tupou, Rob Simmons, Lukhan Tui, Pete Samu, Nick Phipps, Reece Hodge.
